Welcome Aboard

HMO would like to welcome to our newest Board Members: Grace Chow, Dana Francoz, John Turner, Joe Rosenthal, and Karen Linker

John Turner
recently shared his HMO journey with us. He has a dermatology practice in Newmarket and Toronto and is an assistant professor at the University of Toronto.

"I first heard of HMO from my dental hygienist. She was very excited about a trip she had taken to South America where she offered her expertise and services as a volunteer and a clinic she had attended in the Toronto area as a volunteer.

I then talked to a friend who was involved with HMO and arranged to attend one of the Toronto clinics as an observer.  I was very impressed by what I saw and I felt  HMO was an organization that I would like to become involved with. I know how satisfying it is to be able to help others in need.

Thanks, John. It's great to have you with us.

Volunteer Spotlight

We caught up with Lisa Robertson to ask her a few questions about being an HMO volunteer!

What type of work do you do with HMO?
Restorative dental hygiene and dental hygiene duties. I am also involved in the Health Missions Outreach planning committee.

What is your favourite thing about volunteering?
The feeling I get inside while working on a patient.  I'm in my "element."  Whether they suffer from a phobia or have avoided going to a dentist due to life circumstances.  If you can transform their feelings of fear, embarrassment, guilt, into feelings of renewed sense of trust and caring they might walk away feeling differently about healthcare and dentistry possibly making a small difference in their life.

What is your most memorable HMO experience?
There are many memorable experiences as I've met so many amazing people with HMO. But, working in the women's jail in Asuncion, Paraguay and seeing the mothers with their children on visitors day.  The circumstances and living situations within the jail were heart breaking.

What would you say to someone who is thinking about volunteering with HMO?
Come to one of our local clinics to either view what takes place or jump right in and get started that day.  Everyone is very warm and welcoming. You will walk away at the end of the day with a few stories, feeling inspired and thankful.

Clinic Update

On November 9th 2013, HMO held  our biggest clinic  to date at the Church on the Queensway in Toronto, Ontario.

Thanks to the hard work and support from our volunteers, 65 chairs were available and about 268 dental treatment were done.

HMO also provided access to chiropractors, family doctors and acupuncturists.

Special thanks to our fantastic student volunteers from:
